VoiceThread is a powerful tool that allows teachers to create mixed media conversation spaces or presentations. Teachers and students can share media (images, documents, sounds, videos) and make comments on them using webcams, microphones, or keyboards. The idea is to enrich the text-based activities of an online course with authentic audio and video driven communication.

UP has a site license for VoiceThread. Just login to UP Single Sign On (SSO) at https://sso.up.edu and click on the VoiceThread icon to begin exploring.

Your Task:

Create a small VoiceThread project and add it/share it in your Sandbox Course

Moodle Integration

VoiceThread has an integration that allows you to create and share VTs from within Moodle. This can be very useful because it allows you to easily make sure your VT is privately available to your students, and can make grading any student work in VT easier. I would recommend that you try using the Moodle integration to create a Voicethread Assignment directly from your Sandbox Course rather than work from VoiceThread externally.

More Inspiration

As discussed in first the video above, using VoiceThread is pretty simple  - create a VoiceThread, add media, comment, and share. The simplicity allows for lots of creative ways to use VoiceThread. Some of the most straightforward uses are:

  • Creating instructional media by loading in PowerPoints or other lecture materials in and adding voice or video comments.
  • Starting a VoiceThread with a prompt and having students engage in multi-mode discussions.
  • Having students create their own multimedia presentations that you can give voice/video feedback on.

If you would like to read more about how others at UP are using VoiceThread, please see this post I wrote, with input from UP theology, international languages, and education faculty, for our Teaching and Learning blog: VoiceThread Blog Post
