CaptureSpace is a simple, easy to use screen capture tool that can be used to create screen recordings and video lectures or presentations. It's free to download and is integrated into UP's MediaSpace video portal. After recording, you can easily upload your video to UP MediaSpace, where you can share your video and order captioning to make your video accessible to more learners.

There are many ways screen recordings can be enrich an online learning environment. You can use them record narrated PowerPoint videos, create brief tutorials, or just to create a greater sense of presence.

Your Tasks in the Module

  • Download and Install the CaptureSpace client
  • Record a Short Screencast Video
  • Order Captions for Your Video
  • Post Your Video to Your Sandbox Course

Download and Install

This short video covers logging in to UP MediaSpace and downloading/installing CaptureSpace on both Mac and PC. Note that the MediaSpace website has been updated slightly. The menu link that says "Desktop Capture" in the video now reads "Record a Presentation(CaptureSpace)".

Record and Upload Screencast

This video demonstrates how to create and upload a simple screencast.

Basic Editing of Recordings

CaptureSpace allows for basic video editing of your recorded clips prior to upload. Note: You are not required to edit your screencast project for this module. But, if your recording has more than a few seconds of unwanted content at the beginning or end of the video, you can consider using the editing tools in CaptureSpace to "trim" these portions out.

Captioning

Captions are a great way to increase the usability of your online videos, and are necessary in any cases in which you have a student who has a hearing related Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) accommodation in your course.

At UP, we are very fortunate to have access to resources that make obtaining captions  for any video loaded into MediaSpace easy.

  • Any video can have machine captioning applied for free. These are 70-80% accurate and are not ADA compliant - but the resulting captioning files can be edited to correct mistakes.
  • If you would like to obtain Professional, ADA compliant captioning for you instructional videos, just get in with me at kahn@up.edu. I am able to modify your MediaSpace account to allow you to order these captions through a centralized fund at the University, at no cost to yourself or your department. This is highly encouraged for any instructional video you plan to use for multiple terms, and required if you have a student with a relevant accommodation.

Embedding a MediaSpace Video in Moodle

The video below covers sharing your video with students in Moodle. You may use any of the methods covered in this video (Kaltura Video integration, embedding into a label or page, or placing a link to the MediaSpace video page in your course).

Note: To use the embed or link method, you must set your video's Published status to "Unlisted" or others won't be able to access your video. See this 90-second tutorial for an explanation of how to set a video to unlisted: Video: Changing Publish option for private to unlisted.
